A class XII student died on Friday when a speeding bus hit the auto she was travelling in. Laxmi Kumar was on her way to school to appear for a board exam.
The incident occurred at 6.30 am after Laxmi and her friends hired an auto from the Old Bus Stand.
Five of Laxmi's friends, who were also in the auto, were seriously injured in the accident at the Hapur road crossing in Ghaziabad.
"When the auto reached the Hapur road crossing, a speeding bus took a sharp turn and hit the auto," a senior police officer said.
While Laxmi died on the spot, three others were admitted to the nearby Sarvodaya Hospital. All the children are in the age group of 16-18. Two students - Monika Kumar and Soniya Singh - went to school and took the exam.
"The auto was not speeding when the rear part of the bus crashed into the auto. There was no traffic policeman at the intersection, but the local police arrived soon and took the injured to the hospital," Kanchan Singh, an eyewitness, said.
The driver and the conductor fled from the spot.
"But we have arrested the conductor, Israr Ali. A case has been registered at the Kavinagar police station," the police said.
