Over 10,000 students fail to get admission

OVER TEN thousand students could not get admission in various disciplines, in the degree colleges affiliated to Chhatrapati Sahu Ji Maharaj University, during the current academic session. Now the only option left for them is to get admission in evening classes at some of the colleges or appear as private candidates at the university examinations.

University sources said about four thousand students could be accommodated in self-financed colleges. However, since these colleges were under the process of getting recognition from the university, they could not entertain applications for admission to any discipline. After recognition of these colleges a good number of candidates would be able to take admission as regular students of the university.

As per the records, about 63,624 students cleared intermediate examinations conducted by the UP Board, CBSE and ICSC Board. Out of them about 6,500 students have moved out of the district to different states for admission to vocational courses. Remaining 57,000 students were to be accommodated against a total number of 48,020 seats in all the colleges in Kanpur City and in Kanpur Dehat.

Sources said seats in all the colleges had been filled and there was no chance of further admission in any of the colleges. Considering the plight of these students Vice-Chancellor of the University Dr SS Katiyar has allowed the colleges to run evening classes with certain modifications.

In the first phase the university has decided to run evening classes from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. instead of from 5 p.m.

Besides, colleges interested in running evening classes were directed to observe the University Grant Commission (UGC) norms in this regard. They were told that no relaxation would be made in the norms. In case a college was found holding evening classes violating the norms the same might be cancelled.

According to university sources most of the students would get admissions in self-financed college as soon as they get renewal of their recognition.
