Over 4,700 arrested in drug-related cases in 2005

Of the 4,754 arrested in the military-ruled nation, nearly 20 per cent of them were women, the New Light of Myanmar newspaper said.

Myanmar, the world's second-largest grower of opium after Afghanistan, arrested more than 4,750 people last year in connection with drug-related cases, state media said on Saturday.

Of the 4,754 arrested in the military-ruled nation, nearly 20 per cent of them were women, the official New Light of Myanmar newspaper said.

Myanmar is among the world's largest producers and traffickers of amphetamine-type stimulants and has said it plans to eradicate production of opium poppies by 2014.

The government seized over 3.65 million stimulant tablets last year, the newspaper said.
