A new party called Daridra Mukti Parishad (Poverty Liberation Front) has fielded Kamal Kumar Das for the Rangiya Assembly constituency, one of Assam’s last Left bastions. And in keeping with the party’s constitution, he belongs to a class of people precariously balanced on the poverty line.

“In this money-driven world, only the poor can help the poor. We begged and sought donations but couldn’t manage the resources to contest more than one seat,” said Parishad president Bhaben Boro.

Contesting as an independent, Das is up against veterans such as Ananta Deka of the CPI(M), and Ghanashyam Kalita of the Congress.
