Unhappy over the Supreme Court judgement barring the creamy layer among the Scheduled Castes and Tribes from reservations, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Wednesday demanded that the government bring a constitutional amendment to protect their rights.
Pointing out that the government had taken a similar step to retain reservations for SCs/STs in promotions after the Supreme Court verdict on the Mandal Commission, he asserted that such a measure should again be resorted to.
Paswan also said the SCs/STs had been granted reservation on the basis of social backwardness and not on economic criteria.
Since the apex court had changed this, the government should rectify the situation by filling the gaps in the Constitution, the LJP leader opined.
Paswan also demanded that a national judicial commission be set up on the same lines as the UPSC with adequate representation to SCs/STs as well as OBC for filling up posts in the higher judiciary.
