The US Secretary of State Colin Powell has said the terrorists who tried to kill Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf "have always been there" and the world was united in the global war against terrorism.
"Well, those terrorists did not just suddenly come out of the woodwork. They have always been there. And what we have to do is go after them. And we have not been diverted in our attention", Powell said on Monday in an interview to Australian television.
"We have been working with President Musharraf. We have been working with other nations around the world. We put in place protections for our homeland to know who is coming into our nation. Other nations are doing likewise", he said.
Musharraf survived two assassination bids in Rawalpindi last month.
"Law enforcement cooperation, intelligence cooperation, breaking up these Al-Qaeda cells— all these has been going on. We have lost none of our energy for that global war against terrorism", he said.
"And they are responding by trying to hit back, but they will not succeed because the world is united. And what is the alternative? We must go after these terrorists. We cannot let them prevail. We won't let them prevail," the Secretary of State told Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
