Pharmaceutical traders in large numbers entered the BHU campus without any prior notice. They wished to hand over their charter of demands and meet BHU?s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Panjab Singh.
THE ONGOING agitation of pharmaceutical traders, against opening of a medicine shop at Sir Sunderlal Hospital in Banaras Hindu University, took a violent turn when the traders forcibly tried to meet BHU Vice-Chancellor here this noon.
Pharmaceutical traders in large numbers entered the BHU campus without any prior notice. They wished to hand over their charter of demands and meet BHU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Panjab Singh. As the agitated traders reached Mahila Mahavidyalay, security guards at BHU intercepted them.
The security guards resorted to lathi-charge and shooed the traders outside the campus. More than a dozen traders received minor injuries.
In retaliation, the agitated traders pelted stones on security guards from outside the BHU main gate in which some security guards and commuters also received minor injuries. Later, the cops of Lanka police station reached the spot and pacified the agitated traders.
As part of their ongoing agitation, the wholesale pharmaceutical traders of Varanasi observed a complete bandh today. The wholesale pharmaceutical market including Saptsagar, Bulanala, Malviya Market and Golghar remained closed. An estimated business of around 4 crores was affected in Varanasi today.
The pharmaceutical traders under the banner of Lanka Dava Vyavasayi Sangh staged a public meet. More than 100 medicine shops of Lanka Dava Vyavasayi Sangh were closed since November 4.
The traders are demanding cancellation of license of medicine shop in BHU Hospital.
President of Uttar Pradesh Chemist and Druggist Federation, Diwakar Singh and its General Secretary, Suresh Gupta criticised the BHU administration for opening of a medicine shop in BHU Hospital.
The duo said a large number of pharmaceutical traders and their dependents were reeling under financial crisis due to the opening of the medicine shop.
President of Chemist and Druggist Welfare Association, Ramesh Jain, Ramesh Maheshwari of Chemist and Druggist Association, Vibha Shanker Singh of Kashi Aushadhi Vyapar Mandal and President of Lanka Dava Vyavasayi Sangh, Rajendra Agarwal were among others who addressed the meet.
