Meghalaya police on Saturday foiled a major jail break attempt when 12 inmates killed a sentry and tried to loot armoury in the state's Jaintia Hills district.

Superintendent of Police MK Singh said the incident occurred this morning when the prisoners knifed the sentry at Jowai district jail and tried to get into the armoury room.

Police fired at least eight rounds even as local people pounced on the fleeing prisoners and assaulted them, injuring at least five.

All the 12 surrendered to the police, Singh said.
