This figure is almost double the figure in 2009, which saw 164 cases of drunken driving on New Year’s Eve.

Nearly 500 policemen were deployed to check on the motorists.

“We identified some places in the city. Though we did not catch many drunk drivers at the main junctions, several offenders were nabbed in lanes.

The punishment is either a penalty of up to Rs. 2,000 or six months imprisonment or both,” said Vikram Deshmane, deputy commissioner of police (traffic).

There were 3,768 cases of drunk driving this year, of which 807 were registered during the special drive against drink driving in November-December.

However, the police continues to to create awareness among the general public, with a road safety programme organised by the Thane police and the regional transport office, which was kicked of with a motor driving school vehicle rally. The road safety programme is on till January 15.
