Policeman, Ulfa militant killed in gunbattle at Assam’s Goalpara

A policeman and an Ulfa militant were killed in an encounter between security forces and a group of militants at Assam’s Goalpara on Tuesday.
The encounter took place in Zirat after security forces intensified operation against Ulfa (I) following the blast at Dudhnoi in the district that killed three persons on Monday.
Police said that based on intelligence inputs, a team of police and CRPF went to carry out raids at Zirat area on Assam – Meghalaya border under Krishnai police station in Goalpara district. The encounter took place when security forces cordoned off a house in which five – six militants were hiding. One of the police commandos died when the insurgents opened fire and in the ensuing gunbattle, one of the militants was also killed
“One of our commandos and a Ulfa (I) militant were killed in the encounter. Other militants in the house fled from the scene. Our operations are still on”, said Nitul Gogoi , SP of Goalpara district.
Director general of police, Mukesh Sahay visited Dudhnoi blast site on Tuesday. “The blast is an act of Ulfa (I). Now, we have started our operation. Hopefully we will able to crack the terror module”, said Sahay after the visit.
