Sub-Inspector Subash Biswas, two constables and a police driver, were attacked by local people when they went to lift a road blockade in Kazipara area, where a pedestrian was run over by a truck this morning, police said.

Locals got agitated after the death of Md Mubarak Hosain, 46, and were demanding adequate compensation for the victim's family.

Biswas has been admitted to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, where his condition is stated to be critical, while the other three police personnel have been taken to Barasat Hospital, sources said.

After attacking the police team with stones, locals also damaged their jeep, police said. However, no one has been arrested in the incident so far, they said.

Fresh police reinforcements have been sent to the area. RAF has also been deployed there.
