The Supreme Court on Friday declared the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) “unconstitutional” and restored the collegium system of appointing judges in the higher judiciary.

A constitution bench headed by Justice JS Khehar gave a majority ruling that the NJAC was against the independence of the judiciary and the basic structure of the Constitution.

The apex court also said it will consider the introduction of measures to improve the existing collegium system. The issue will be heard on November 3.
