A DAY after a teenaged girl, Sonal was found dead in the bathroom of her house at Kamla Nagar, it has been confirmed that she had been murdered.

The post-mortem report said the girl was strangulated to death, said CSP (TT Nagar) Dharamvir Singh. However, the report suggested the girl had not been sexually violated.

The police suspect the culprit made sexual advances on the girl and when she resisted the person strangled her to death. The police had found a ‘dupatta’ tied tightly around her neck.

The marks on her neck were apparently inflicted during the strangulation. The police surmise the accused was an acquaintance. “He must have been familiar with the girl”, a policeman on the crime scene said on the basis of circumstantial evidence.

Sonal was a student of XI. She was alone in the house at the time of the incident and her younger sister on her return from school found her lying dead in the bathroom.

Sonal’s head was inside a bucket full of water while the ‘dupatta’ was tied around the neck. Initially, the police had suspected that she died as a result of electrocution. Her father is an employee with CPWD while her mother works with the Census office.

Now after the post-mortem report has confirmed murder, the police are interrogating her friends and neighbours. The Kamla Nagar police are investigating the matter and claim that they would nab the killer soon. Side Story: Working parents’ children vulnerable!

THE INCIDENT is similar to the murder of Akanksha alias Bulbul, a seven-year-old who was killed in similar circumstances in the same area in June 2004.

Like Sonal whose parents are working, Bulbul’s mother and father were working and she remained alone in the house. It was on June 21, 2004 that a neighbourhood youth in Police Lines of Nehru Nagar tried to rape her. When she resisted and called for help, the accused strangulated and stabbed her to death. The accused was later arrested. Also, Pooja Jain, 8, was raped and murdered in Mangalwara by Amol Singh Sahu, who is yet to be arrested. Sahu worked at her father’s shop.
