“The Badarpur plant was shut down for some technical reasons, after which one of the lines was also shut in the afternoon. It became functional around 3 pm. But the same line tripped after that as the branch of a tree fell on it. We restored the line around 5 pm,” said a senior Transco official.

Areas such as Vasant Kunj, Vasant Vihar, Munirka, Saket, Mehrauli, Hauz Khas, CR Park, Alaknanda, Malviya Nagar, Adchini, Ber Sarai among others were severely affected.

The situation was made worse because Transco Limited had already shut down its Mehrauli-Bamnauli transmission line for installing a transmission tower to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the Indira Gandhi International Airport. This line will be functional only on Monday now.

According to officials, there was no power supply in many areas of South Delhi for more than five hours.
