The Supreme Court on Monday directed that a police officer of the rank of DIG should monitor the investigation into the death of Prof HS Sabharwal, who had succumbed to injuriesdue to alleged beating by some student union leaders in Ujjain.
A Bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat directed the Director General of Police to place before it the status report by November 3.
The Court also directed the DIG to place an affidavit before it about the allegation that the investigation was not carried impartially.
The Bench also asked the Madhya Pradesh police to ensure that witnesses who are willing to give statements should be provided protection for recording their statements.
The Court also issued notices to the CBI, Madhya Pradesh government and other respondents on a petition filed by Prof Sabharwal's son Himanshu seeking investigation of the case by the CBI.
