The NCR Planning Board has said it is important to protect agricultural land, forest cover and water bodies. It has said the state government should focus on agro-based industry.
The reduction in the canal irrigated agricultural land in the long run will have larger repercussions on agricultural produce and food security in the area. Agricultural land has shrunk from 84.46% to 78.38% between 1999 and 2008. UP proposes to further reduce it from 78.38% to 51.93% by 2031.
The NCR board says forest cover in the NCR part of Uttar Pradesh has been reduced from 3.4% in 1999 to 3.3% in 2008 and the state proposes further reduction to 2.18% which is not appropriate. In fact, the NCR board’s regional plan-2021 proposed total forest cover to be 10% of the total area of the region. It is suggested that the total forest cover in the sub-region should be at least 10% of the total area.
The board says the area under water bodies has been proposed 2.22% (240.99 skm) whereas the existing water bodies (2008) constitute2.72% which is not appropriate. Water bodies should not be reduced since the NCR part of Uttar Pradesh is undergoing rapid urbanisation and each parcel of land is susceptible to building activities, it would be appropriate that strict policy for preservation of all existing water bodies should be adopted.
