Rae Bareli lauds Sonia?s moral courage
DESPITE AN initial sense of disbelief, people of Rae Bareli have lauded Sonia Gandhi’s “moral courage” in resigning from the Lok Sabha. Sonia represented Rae Bareli in Parliament.
They expressed satisfaction that she had decided to contest a by-election from this constituency once again.
As the news of Sonia’s resignation spread like wildfire in the city, people came out on the streets in a bid to ascertain whether the report was true. There was a feeling among people that Sonia had proved once again that she was a strong votary of democracy in the country. “She has done Rae Bareli proud,” said ITI Officers’ Association president Virendra Dixit.
It was clear that people stood firmly behind the Congress leader whose role in the development of the constituency was undeniable.
Accusing Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and BJP leader LK Advani of carrying out a campaign against Sonia, social activist Naval Kishore said rivals would not be able to save their deposits in a contest against her. “Let her fight, we will return Sonia Gandhi with a bigger margin,” said woman activist Saeeda Khatoon. She said Sonia had won the hearts of people by the way in which she nursed her constituency.
During the last two years, development work worth Rs 2,000 crore was sanctioned for the constituency, which reminded people of the “Indira era” of development.
However, Paho village pradhan Suresh Paswan said it was unfortunate that she had resigned. Paswan feared it would hamper the on-going developmental activities. The Congress office here reverberated with slogans like “Sonia tum sangharsh karo ham tumhare saath hain.” District congress president Umashankar Mishra said her decision had enhanced the image of Rae Bareli. He dared Sonia’s detractors to contest the election against her. Central Bar Association president Shiv Kumar Shukla said, “Only Sonia Gandhi could have demonstrated such moral courage”.
Jeweller Purshottam Gupta said, “Sonia da jawab nahin (There is no alternative to Sonia)”. Udyog Vyapar Mandal district president Basant Singh Bagga said she had set another good example in politics. CPM leader Dr Ram Bahadur Verma said, “It is another example of morality”. Feroze Gandhi College principal Dr KN Shrivastav said her sacrifice was unparalleled in contemporary Indian politics.
