The foundation laying ceremony for the long-awaited railway coach factory in Rae Bareli on Tuesday marked the end of a tussle between Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.

With Lok Sabha elections approaching, the Congress was in a hurry to lay the foundation of the Rs 1,685-crore project to manufacture 850 coaches a year in Gandhi's constituency.

But the Mayawati government scuttled the project in October 2008 by cancelling the land allotment to the factory.

Even though there has been no improvement in relations between the rivals, Gandhi on Tuesday avoided making any comment against Mayawati during the ceremony. She said, “I wanted to speak on UP, but Lalu Yadav (Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav) has said enough.”

Earlier, Gandhi was supposed to lay the foundation on October 14, 2008, but Mayawati cancelled the land allotment on October 11, resulting in a weeklong spat. The issue even also triggered a legal tussle, which was resolved only after Mayawati re-allotted the land on October 18, 2008.

Mayawati had crossed swords with Sonia Gandhi at a time when there was growing bonhomie between the Congress and Mulayam Singh-led Samajwadi Party (SP).
