Legendary Indian playback singer Mohammed Rafi was remembered by fans in South Africa at a show held here to mark his 25th death anniversary.

On Saturday evening at the Patidar Theatre in Lenasia, south of here, the audience at the show joined in a countdown to midnight to mark the exact date when Rafi succumbed to a heart attack on 31 July, 1980.
The show was in aid of "Hope", a charity organisation that assists destitute street children to get a better life through skills training.
The show was the last of a dozen on Rafi over the past month organised by Gujarat-based promoter Baba Sohel. Although only six shows were planned in South Africa, the demand led to the tour programme being doubled.
Sohel, who has been organising such shows in India and abroad for the past decade, said the response in South Africa, especially in Cape Town, was terrific. More than 5,000 fans had filled a show venue despite the Indian community in the city being much smaller than in other cities.
"After doing these shows all over the world, I feel that there are more fans of Rafisaheb in South Africa than anywhere else; I don't think there is support of this nature for a show from so many of his fans even in India," Sohel told IANS.
Debashish Dasgupta, a singer whose voice closely resembles that of the late Rafi, could not satisfy all the fans' requests at every show for the many songs of the singing legend that have become eternal hits.
Dasgupta was joined on stage by singers Meena Shivling, Rekha Rawal and Bharat Gohail, as well as Sohel's five-man band from India, "Music With Love".
"Even though we planned for about 40 songs in each show, the demand from audiences was such that we had to go well beyond that at times, especially in Cape Town, where the show lasted more than five hours instead of the three planned; and people still would not leave."
