Maintaining that BJP can only provide 'emotional support' to Rahul Mahajan, embroiled in a drug abuse case, party president Rajnath Singh has said his political future in the party would depend on the outcome of police investigations.

"Police is right now investigating the matter. Whatever results come out of these investigations, only then will I be able to answer this question on the future of Rahul," Singh told a private channel when asked whether the BJP's doors were still open for the late Pramod Mahajan's son, a release from the channel said.

Making it clear that the party can only provide 'emotional support' to the family in the present circumstances, he said, "Please tell me what role can we have when the police is looking into the matter. And why should the BJP be linked to personal issues of any leader. And nobody should also expect that from the party."

The party has been under attack for 'deserting' the Mahajan family in the wake of the recent episode. After BJP patriarch Atal Bihari Vajpayee expressed sympathy towards the junior Mahajan, some party leaders including Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi visited him at the police station where he was in police custody.
