Rain brings a mixed bag to Gorakhpur

THE CITY received season?s first heavy shower on Tuesday morning. The rain continued for two hours and brought about the much-needed respite to residents from the scorching heat. However, normal life was paralysed for half a day. According to the Metrological department officials, 75.8 mm rain was recorded in three spells since this morning.

Most roads were waterlogged and commuters were caught in traffic jams due to it. School children were the worst sufferers. Most missionary schools had re-opened on Tuesday. The rain began at about 7 am lowering temperatures. Low-lying areas like Betiahata, Buxipur, and Tarang crossing, Humayunpur, Nakhas, Reti Chowk, Ghosh Company, Bank Road and Dharmshala Bazar, Townhall were turned into temporary pools of water. Water level rose in Kuano, Rapti, and Budhi Rapti rivers. The markets remained closed and roads wore a deserted look.

Lightning claims four lives
LIGHTNING CLAIMED five lives in Gorakhpur, Maharajganj and Siddharthnagar districts. In Siktaur village under Chiluatal police station of the district Lambu Prasad (50) was sleeping in his hut with family members when lightning struck the hut setting it on fire. Prasad died on the spot while two other members of his family Lichchivi Devi and Suresh sustained burn injuries.

Three other people died due lightning in three different places in village Harpur, Jhakni and Puruhar under Nichlaul police station of Maharajganj district.

The deceased have been identified as Persan Gupta (50), Devendra Gaur along with a lady who was not identified till filing of the report. Lightning claimed a life and left half-a dozen seriously injured in villages in Domariaganj on Monday evening.
