Ramesh hasn’t done a favour to the country in Copenhagen
Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh’s contention that our country’s sovereignty has been respected at the Copenhagen summit is ridiculous (Jairam admits climate shift, December 23). Ramesh should realise that he hasn’t done any favour to the country by ensuring its sovereignty. The flip-flops on the emissions reduction issue have only diluted India’s stance rather than upholding it. His conduct at the summit has been quite disappointing and goes to show that the government cannot depend on one single minister to take a call on serious issues of international concern. It is time that parliamentary approval is made mandatory for ratification of agreements, conventions or for that matter, even protocol.

Justice delayed is justice denied
Mondy Thapar in Overreacting? (December 23), rightly pointed out that the manner in which S.P.S. Rathore misused his position to escape conviction after subjecting Ruchika Girhotra to a heinous crime is deplorable. It is shameful that our judiciary let him off with such a light sentence considering the nature of his crime. The case should be reviewed and Rathore should be dealt with severely. It’s sickening to see his smiling pictures in the papers. There must be a particular time limit for every trial as delays in the judicial process only lead to erosion of faith in the judiciary.

Kasab’s taking us for a ride
This refers to the report Kasab’s latest: was shot at in police station (December 22). The terrorist has, by now, caught the pulse of the lethargic Indian judicial system and is only buying time to slow the process further. The laconic pace of the trial has exposed the Indian judiciary’s inept nature. And Ajmal Kasab is only taking his own sweet time to retract his statements. It’s ludicrous to see how a captive terrorist is making a mockery of our judicial system. When are we going to stop acting like sitting ducks and make an effort to deliver justice to those who have been wronged?
