"I wish I could have persuaded my father not to take up this case. He is an MP. I believe it is the responsibility of a legislator to see there is some kind of belief and credibility in the judicial system”, Rani Jethmalani, who is also a lawyer practicing in the Supreme Court, said.

She said it was all the more “painful” as she had campaigned for women rights and dedicated much to running an NGO and researching on women’s rights.

“It was indeed very painful for me and I think I have been on the television participating in the discussions and trying to help (Jessica’s cause) in any way I can”, Rani Jethmalani said.

Jethmalani’s son Mahesh said: “I, my sister and our entire family have opposed him for defending Manu Sharma. We tried to convince him there is no compelling reason for him to take-up this case. This wasn’t a case of public importance. But obviously, there are many people who have more influence on him than us.”
