Re-poll underway in 5 Assam seats

Voting in five polling stations in Assam began on Wednesday following the Election Commission's order of re-election due to the failure of and damage to electronic voting machines (EVMs).
"Polling is going on peacefully in all the five stations," an election official said.
The five stations holding a re-poll are 64 Patharkandi, 135 Karimganj North, 171 Karimganj North, 105 Lahowal, and 4 Chabua.
"Re-polling in the 64 Patharkandi, 135 Karimganj, and 105 Lahowal was necessitated as the there mechanical failures in the EVMs on Monday when the first phase of assembly elections were held," Assam's Chief Electoral Officer JP Prakash said.
"In Chabua, some miscreants damaged the EVMs and in 171 Karimganj North the voting machines were damaged when the vehicle carrying the machines met with an accident".
Voting concluded on Monday in the first phase covering 65 of the 126 constituencies.
The second and final phase of voting in the remaining 61 constituencies is set for April 10.
