Refugee influx from Lanka worries Jayalalithaa

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said that influx of refugees showed that the situation was not conducive in the island republic.

Expressing concern over increase in the influx of refugees from Sri Lanka to Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Wednesday said it showed that the situation was not conducive in the island republic.

"The influx brings back the memory of 1983 situation, when there was a large influx.

"Everyday, more and more number of refugees are arriving here," she told reporters in Chennai.

Asked whether India should help Sri Lanka to end the ethnic strife in the island, she said it all depended on what sort of help Sri Lanka demanded.

"If they need doctors and nurses, we can send them. If it is some thing else, we have to think over it," she said.
