This was stated by a few experts of textiles and clothing during a discussion at a national workshop organised here in Varanasi on Friday.
This workshop was jointly organised under the auspices of Textile Committee, UNCTD and Human Welfare Association.
Speaking as a chief guest, Director (Market Research Wing) of Textile Committee, P Nayak said the Benarasi handloom saris and clothing industry was undergoing a crisis and it was imperative to protect it by registering it under Geographical Indications.
Member of All India Handloom Board, Sayed Hassan Ansari said China was duplicating Indian traditional items and selling in the market. He added such practices would be checked by protecting India’s traditional business of specific regions under Geographical Indications.
