There are nearly 8,000 auto-rickshaws in the city and a majority of these are not registered. Besides, drivers ply vehicles without valid documents.

Bharti Arora, DCP (traffic) distributed registration cards to auto drivers at Mahavir Chowk on Friday.

With this, autos will now be registered online and authorised cards will be issued to the drivers. The registration cards will also make it mandatory for drivers to follow rules and regulations. Any driver not wearing uniform, plying passengers over the permissible limit and driving rashly will be fined and strict action will be taken against him.

The DCP also gave directions to people on safety and traffic rules. In the first phase of the drive, 2,000 autos would be registered.
