As diverse is as profile of the areas under the RK Puram Assembly constituency are the issues that will determine the winner from here.
It constitutes of posh areas such as Anand Niketan, RK Puram and Vasant Vihar on one hand and slum clusters and villages such as Munirka and Mohammadpur on the other.
In the 22 sectors of RK Puram that houses government servants, residents are happy with the work done so far.
“There are community centres in all sectors and cleanliness is maintained. We are quite satisfied with the MLA’s performance,” said Tej Marwah, who owns a shop in RK Puram Sector 3.
While civic work has been satisfactory, residents believe that the issue of corruption is more pressing.
In Munirka, the chronic parking problem is still not fixed. “Parking remains the biggest problem in the area.
Some headway has been made but a lot remains to be done.
Aam Aadmi Party’s entry into the electoral fray has also generated a lot of interest,” said Jaideep Manchanda, a resident of DDA flats in Munirka.
Others, however, disagree. “The Aam Aadmi Party will be good as an effective opposition but I have doubts over their ability to govern,” said Rajan Russel, who has been living in Munirka since 1988.
A stone throw’s distance away in Munirka Village, the issues are completely different. “We have no water in this area.
Pipelines were laid but the water is muddy. The sewer lines are not laid either. We have demanded that the garbage dhalao be removed from here but no action has been taken.
That said, Barkha Singh has tried to do a lot in the area. This year, however, there is a lot of buzz around AAP’s Shazia Ilmi. There are a lot of supporters here,” said Mohinder Singh, resident, Munirka Village.
Ilmi, in fact, is expected to give strong competition to Singh since the Bharatiya Janata Party is yet to decide its candidate from the constituency. The residents, who repeatedly talk about how approachable Singh is, have also mentioned that Ilmi has frequently visited them in the past months.
A number of residents of areas such as Vasant Vihar, Anand Niketan and Vasant Enclave have been campaigning for AAP in the recent months.
It is in these pockets that the support for Congress has seemingly waned. “Local issues do not matter to me in the assembly elections.
Roads and sewers are things that fall under the municipal corporation. For us the issues are bad governance and corruption. The Congress has failed on both counts,” said GK Chadda, resident, A Block, Vasant Vihar.
