Rs 1-lakh crore remained unspent by ministries in FY'08: Govt
The government today said over Rs 1-lakh crore remained unspent by ministries and departments, excluding the Railways, during 2007-08, against the sum allocated to them.
The government on Thursday said over Rs 1-lakh crore remained unspent by ministries and departments, excluding the Railways, during 2007-08, against the sum allocated to them.
"The unspent amounts reported in the Appropriation Accounts of Civil Ministries/Departments (excluding Railways), Postal and Defence services during the year 2006-07 and 2007- 08, were Rs 2,789 crore and Rs 1,12,707 crore, respectively,"
Minister of State for Finance Namo Narain Meena told Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
The minister was replying to a question whether, as per Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), around Rs 1 lakh crore Budget funds go unspent each year.
The CAG has also pointed out that there is uncertainty whether all the amounts shown as spent in government accounts have actually been spent.
Meena said the finance ministry issues instructions to all ministries/departments every year to review the existing expenditure Budget first in order to priorities the activities and schemes at the time of formulation of expenditure estimates.
