Dasgupta, who visited worst-hit Udainarainpur block along with state Relief Minister Golam Mortaza, Environment Minister Mahanta Chatterjee and Cooperation Minister RN Ghosh, said the government was ready to provide more boats for rescuers to reach the marooned people.

Relief materials, he said, would not be distributed by political workers but only by the district authorities and the situation in the block would be monitored by the concerned officials daily.

Dasgupta said the situation was grave at Udainaraianpur, specially since it had received the flood waters of neighbouring Burdwan and Hoogly districts. As a result, the block was heavily flooded affecting three lakh people out of the total five lakh flooded-hit in the district.

One person had died of snake bite in the district during the floods.
