The supplementary chargesheet is ready and expected to be submitted in a Gujarat court soon. “Our supplementary chargesheet in the Sadiq Jamal fake encounter case has been finalised and would be submitted soon. We will mention the role of two IB officials who were then working with its Maharashtra unit, for their role in the conspiracy,” said a CBI source.

The agency’s probe has revealed that Mehtar was targeted by a then official of IB’s Maharashtra unit, who had allegedly created a fake source report that identified the deceased as a criminal sent to Ahmedabad from Dubai to kill political leaders including then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi. The CBI had recorded the version of the officials then with IB’s Maharashtra unit who are under its scanner.

Mehtar was picked up in Mumbai by Maharashtra police officials in December 2002 and handed over to their Gujarat counterparts in January 2003. Mehtar was killed 10 days later in cold blood in Ahmedabad, the CBI said in its main charge sheet filed in December last against eight Gujarat policemen.

The CBI also suspects the role of a deported Dawood Ibrahim aide, Tariq Parveen, in the case and questioned him.
