Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam explores the decline of feudal landed family and the raising bourgeoisie in the late 19th century.

The film also depicted the apathy of a beautiful and unloved woman called Chhoti Bahu (Meena Kumari). Her beauty charmed everybody but her husband. He dumps her and spends his time with the other women.

Choti Bahu seeks support from Bhootnath (Guru Dutt), a young rustic, who has come to Calcutta in search of a job. Bhoothnath is struck by her beauty and sadness and inadvertently becomes Chhoti Bahu's secret confidante.

Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam  marked a turning point in Guru Dutt's personal life. His muse Waheeda Rehman decided to establish her own identity outside his films. Dutt was deeply hurt by Rehman's departure and his last efforts to reunite with estranged wife Geeta also failed.
