The match began on an even keel with both the teams matching each other in attack as well as defence. The teams were neck and neck until half time with Punjab having an advantage of one goal (13-12).
The second half too began on the same note and for much duration of the second half there was nothing to chose between the two teams. It was in the last 10 minutes that the SAI exhibited better coordination and penetration in attack and mustered up the lead of five goals.
Punjab again appeared fighting back, but by then it had been too late and they went down 27-24. Anil Kumar (7), Harphul (5), Shiv Narayan (5) and Subhash Chander (4) were the main scorers for SAI. Mohinder Singh (8), Avtar Singh (5) and Supreet Singh (5) reduced the margin for the losers.
Earlier, Karan Anand (13) and Vaibhav (10) helped Chandigarh finished a creditable third by beating Andhra Pradesh by 41-35 (25-18). N Dayakar (14) and B Kannaiah (9) were the principal goal-getters for AP.
For third and fourth places: Chandigarh (Karan Anand 13, Vaibhav 6, Shenar 6, Harish 5, Bharat Bhushan 4, Salim 3) bt Andhra Pradesh (N Dayakar 14, B Kannaiah 9, Swaminathan 7, Abdul Munaf 2, G Anid 2, J Vijaykumar 1) 41-35 (25-18).
Final positions: 1 SAI Gandhi Nagar, 2 Punjab, 3 Chandigarh, 4 Andhra Pradesh, 5 Chattisgarh, 6 Delhi, 7 Himachal Pradesh and 8 Haryana.
