In a surprise move, Registrar, AU Firdous A Wani issued a letter to the medical college authorities, cancelling the order issued by assistant registrar (accounts) regarding submission of salary bills of teachers, officers, and non-teaching staff of the medical college and its associated hospitals, for the release of November salary by the varsity. Both the orders were issued in a span of three days, which has further complicated the situation at the MLNMC.

Registrar Firdous A Wani, in his letter dated November 27, 2006 termed the order of 'officiating' assistant registrar (accounts) as 'inadvertent' and without any 'authority'. Whereas in a letter dated November 24, 2006, the assistant registrar (accounts) had sought information from the medical college authorities with the aim to ensure that the salary is disbursed on time by the varsity.

The letter stated that the salary bills of all the teachers, officers, employees and non-teaching staff posted at the MLN MC and its associated hospitals including SRNH, MD Eye Hospital and SN Children's Hospital, should be submitted to the varsity for the release of November salary. The medical college authorities were also requested to submit the copy of October salary bills.

Sources said this was a step forward towards formal administrative take over of the MLNMC and all its associated hospitals by AU. But, this has further delayed the release of the teachers and staff salary for the month of November. The medical college administration is also perplexed over the situation, as nothing has been mentioned about the salary issue.

"We are waiting for clear instructions by the varsity regarding the release of salary. Until, then we cannot take any decision on the salary of teachers and staff of the medical college and its associated hospitals," said Dr PC Saxena, Principal, MLN Medical College.

Registrar Firdous A Wani said, "The assistant registrar (accounts) was not authorised to issue such kind of order. Even I am also not authorised to issue the direction regarding release of salary. The matter will be settled very soon."
