Saudis bail out beleaguered Indians

Two Indians in Riyadh have been bailed out of their plight following intervention by some Saudis.

Two Indians - one whose passport had been confiscated by his sponsor and another who was under detention - have been bailed out of their plight following intervention by some Saudis and the Indian embassy here.

While Ganesh Pande had his passport confiscated by his sponsor, water tanker driver Doraiswamy had been under detention for a year.

The case of Pande, a specialist in internal medicine, was taken up by, with the Riyadh Governorate.

Pande, who had come to Riyadh in 1986 on a contract to work at Olaya Polyclinic Center, a private clinic here, was a victim of a business gone sour and bureaucratic tangles.

Now, with matters sorted out, he will leave for India on a five-week vacation for the first time after nearly three and a half years.

Doraiswamy was arrested when his water tanker ran into a car during an accident in Riyadh, killing two Saudi youths.

An office-bearer of the Riyadh Indian Association then contacted Abdullah Al Nahadh, a Saudi businessman-cum-social worker, and sought his intervention in the matter, the yahind.com report said.

Abdullah, with the help of his friend, Saud bin Mushnan Al Gabbani, a police official, contacted the parents of both victims and negotiated the release of Doraiswamy.

The report quoted Al-Nahadh as saying that Doraiswamy could have been released much earlier but for his sponsor's refusal to intervene in the matter.
