Three teachers from the Nabagram KBS High School, Murshidabad, have been accused of beating up a student and stubbing him with cigarettes on Monday afternoon.
The student has been admitted to the sub-divisional hospital, police said, adding that a complaint was lodged by his family at the Kandi police station on Monday night.
Sources said the incident occurred when 18-year-old Jubarul Sheikh, a resident of Kandi-Hatpara and a student of class 11, went to the school to get a character certificate from his teacher-in-charge (TIC), Abu Sufian. However, Sufian reportedly refused to give the certificate without checking Sheikh's Madhyamik admit card.
In the altercation that broke out, the TIC allegedly dragged Sheikh into a classroom and started beating him. Two other teachers, Mukti Haque and Minakshi Chowdhury, allegedly joined Sufian in assaulting Sheikh - going as far as to burn him with cigarettes.
Sheikh was later admitted to the Kandi sub-divisional hospital, where his condition deteriorated. "I just came to know about the incident. We are looking into the matter, and action will be taken if anyone who is found guilty," said Humayun Kabir, Murshidabad SP.
Sheikh's father, Habzar Ali, was beside himself with indignation. "I am a poor farmer," he said. "My son Jubarul is entitled to a government scholarship. To get that money, he needed a character certificate issued by the school. My son had been asking the TIC for the certificate for the last one month, but he just wouldn't give it."
The teachers, however, had a different version. "Sheikh and three other students - Mahabul, Kasav and Fekajul - were beating up Sufian. When we tried to help him, they assaulted us too. We lodged a complaint against them at the Kandi police station. Their complaint against us is false, and Sheikh got himself admitted to the hospital just to prove his case."
