Senior superintendent of police (Allahabad) Vijay Singh Meena said policemen moved into position with two teams, comprising members of the Special Operations Group (SOG), Allahabad, the STF and personnel of the Jaunpur Kotwali. They then mounted vigil on Quila Road in Jaunpur.

The SSP said around 4.50 am, policemen saw a motorcycle. When asked to stop, the riders tried to escape from the spot after opening fire on the police team. It was when the police party returned fire that Dabbu was killed on the spot. The police said they recovered a .303 bore countrymade pistol and a cartridge near the slain criminal.

Later, police also recovered a foreign-make pistol, loaded with five bullets, besides some other weapons and a cellphone.

Police said Dabbu, son of Ram Asrey Singh, was a resident of Sadipur under Bardah police station in Azamgarh district. There were 17 criminal cases, including those of murder and attempted murder, lodged against him.

Earlier this week, there were reports of Dabbu’s arrest. A fax message had expressed the apprehension that he would be gunned down in a fake encounter.

Dabbu’s relatives had faxed the message to the Chief Minister’s office and senior officials.
