Acting on specific information about presence of militants, police cordoned Krankshavan-Sopore, 55 kms from Srinagar on Sunday morning, a police spokesman said.

In the ensuing encounter, the self-styled district commander identified as Abu Shaheen Afgani was killed.

Terming the killing of Afgani as a major breakthrough, the spokesman said the ultra had planned a major strike ahead of Independence Day in the apple-rich town of Sopore.
