Senior BJP leader Ramesh Tatya Alshi passed away due to protracted illness, family sources said.

Senior BJP leader Ramesh Tatya Alshi passed away on Thursday due to protracted illness, family sources said.

A prominent social worker from Vikramgadh, Alshi is survived by his wife, son and daughter.

He was 73 and was ailing for a couple of months and was being treated at the Bombay hospital, they said.

Alshi, who also held the post of former president of Vikramgadh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, was responsible for the party's growth in the taluka.

He was the founder member of the erstwhile Jana Sangh and strived a lot for its growth while facing many odds.

Educational institutions and traders in the town mourned the demise of Alsi and remained closed for the day on Thursday.

The leader's funeral was largely attended this noon by members across political parties including BJP district chief Chintaman Wanga, they added.
