Serena Williams (United States)

Age: 22
Lives: Palm Beach Gardens, Florida
Plays: Right-handed (double-handed backhand)
Grand-slam titles: Six (US Open 1999, 2002, French Open 2002, Wimbledon 2002, 2003, Australian Open 2003)
Record at US Open: 2003-DNP, 2002-winner, 2001-runner-up, 2000-quarter-final, 1999-winner, 1998-third round.

Blessed with incredible physical attributes, Serena dominated the women's game to win four consecutive grand slams from the 2002 French Open.

At her best she looks unbeatable, crunching down unplayable serves and blasting winners from both wings. But since winning Wimbledon in 2003 she has been hit by knee injuries.

Returned to the tour in March after surgery to her left knee to win the Miami title but has looked well below her dominant best since and was outplayed by Maria Sharapova in the Wimbledon final.
