Raids were conducted on Tuesday by 17 Customs and Excise department teams at the premises of five builders at Civil Lines, Swarupnagar, Tilaknagar and other localities in Kanpur, official sources said on Wednesday.
The raiding teams seized documents and computer floppies which pointed to huge service tax evasion.
The builders, however, claimed that they were not required to pay service tax as they were carrying out construction on lands owned by them and were spending their own money for the purpose.
Further investigation is being carried out, sources added.
