Seven arrested for rape of Indian woman in Nepal

Nepal police have arrested seven persons for allegedly raping an Indian woman who had come to visit the Gadhimai Mela, a religious fair held every five years in Bara district of Nepal bordering India.

Nepal police have arrested seven persons for allegedly raping an Indian woman who had come to visit the Gadhimai Mela, a religious fair held every five years in Bara district of Nepal bordering India.

According to delayed reports, the incident happened on Tuesday afternoon when the accused, all Nepali youths, raped the woman aged around 20 near the Gadhimai Temple.

Local police say the victim a resident of Motihari in East Champaran district of Bihar had come to take part in the fair when the youths accosted her and raped her.

"A police team which was patrolling the area nabbed the accused after they heard the victim's screams for help," said a police officer.

The accused, aged between 18 and 20, have been remanded to police custody and the victim kept at a local women and children centre.

Gadhimai Mela, known as the world's largest animal sacrifice fair, is visited by millions of people from Nepal and India and will continue till December 11.

This year nearly 200,000 animals and birds have been estimated to have been sacrificed at the temple.
