The state Cabinet late on Friday cleared a proposal to allow the single-screen theatre owners across the state to charge Rs 6 per ticket as additional service tax.

This means a ticket for stalls at theatres like Eros or New Empire will now cost Rs 56 instead of Rs 50. Similarly a ticket for balcony or dress circles will cost another Rs 6 more.

For theatres without air conditioners, the permissible ticket hike is Rs 5.

The state cleared this hike so as to enable single screen theatres to provide better facilities to moviegoers.

Single-screen theatres have been facing a huge threat from multiplexes and this is a bid to protect them. Even, with the hike, the tickets at single-screen theatres will continue to be much cheaper to its fancy counterparts.
