Situation limps back to normal in TN; toll 6,238

Situation in several parts of TN's tsunami-hit coastal areas is slowly limping back to normal, five-days after disaster struck the state.

Situation in several parts of Tamil Nadu's tsunami-hit coastal areas is slowly limping back to normal, five-days after disaster struck claiming 6,238 lives in the state and the administration and the civic authorities are now busy undertaking restoration and relief works.

A top official put the toll officially at 6,238, Nagapattinam district alone accounting for 4379 deaths, closely followed by Kanniyakumari district with 808, Cuddalore district with 590 and Chennai city with 206. Other nine affected districts accounted for the rest.

However, according to information reaching the headquarters from other sources, the toll was over 7000. Many more were still reported missing.

The Tsunami also injured 2730 people, besides damaging over 85,000 houses and huts, involving a population of 6.72 lakh in 396 villages and colonies.

Meanwhile, reports reaching said several ministers were supervising the relief works in all the affected districts. Rice, blankets, sarees and dhotis, promised by the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, were distributed by the ministers in several parts of the state.
