South African captain Graeme Smith put a miserable tour of Australia behind him when he hammered an unbeaten 89 and led his team to a two-run win in a 20-over international at the start of Australia's return tour at the Wanderers Stadium.

Smith had a highest score of 39 in ten innings against Australia on the away tour as his team were beaten 2-0 in a Test series and failed to reach the final of a triangular one-day tournament.

But Smith rode his luck as well as hitting some stunning shots as South Africa raced to 201 for four. Australia made 199 for seven in reply.

The tourists looked doomed at 124 for six, but some powerful lower order hitting by Brad Hogg (41) and Brett Lee (43 not out) enabled them to get to within three runs of victory, with 16 runs coming off the last over bowled by Makhaya Ntini.

Smith and Herschelle Gibbs pounded the Australian bowling in a second wicket partnership of 111 off 65 balls, roared on by a big crowd. All 32,000 tickets were sold but the ground was not completely full after rain delayed the start by two hours.

Gibbs thrashed 56 off 34 deliveries with four fours and four sixes— two of his sixes coming off successive balls against left-arm spinner Brad Hogg immediately after he was dropped in the deep by Mick Lewis off Hogg when he had 41.

Rain fell soon after Smith won the toss and decided to bat. When the weather cleared, the teams agreed to play a full 20 overs a side, waiving a playing condition calling for overs to be reduced after the loss of an hour.
