To keep a check on unauthorised speed breakers in the Millennium City, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) administrator Praveen Kumar has directed superintending engineers (SEs) RK Kakkar and AK Gupta of Circle 1 and 2 respectively to identify such speed breakers. Residents construct most of the speed breakers without the consent of the competent authority and in contravention of Indian Road Congress (IRC) Codes.

According to IRC norms, the height of a speed breaker should be four inches, width 1 meter, and 1.25 metres of slope on both sides. Besides, necessary road signs and markings should be put to avoid accidents. Speed breakers are allowed in front of educational institutions, hospitals and temples or areas with huge traffic flow. Around 95% of speed breakers constructed on internal roads of the city are unauthorised, said an official on condition of anonymity.

"We have been taking action in this regard from time to time. We have so far dismantled seven unauthorised speed breakers in the past one month. We will also conduct a survey to identify faulty speed breakers and improve their standard," said Kakkar.

Recently, the traffic police had taken up the issue with Huda, Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) and Public Works Department (PWD) -- the three major departments which are in-charge of roads.

"Most of the speed breakers are not painted and are invisible from a distance leading to accidents," said Bharti Arora, DCP (traffic).

Traffic police have been facing tough time in managing safety on roads due to faulty speed breakers.

"Gurgaon is also known as Millennium City but its road engineering is yet to meet IRC codes' parameters, especially in terms of speed breakers which are not only faulty but are also status symbol of influential people," said Jagjit Singh Walia, who has filed an RTI with Huda to know the standard of speed breakers in Gurgaon.
