Sonia's resignation a damage control stunt: SP
Terming Congress President Sonia Gandhi's resignation from Lok Sabha as a "damage control stunt", the Samajwadi Party on Saturday said the show of support to her by slogan-shouting crowds was also "sponsored".
"There is no sacrifice in her resignation ... Its a damage control stunt", senior SP leader and party MP Beni Prasad Verma from Uttar Pradesh told newsmen.
Criticising the UPA government for adjourning the Parliament sine die, Verma said the government did so as it did not want the issue of redefining the office of profit to be debated in the house.
Terming the proposed decision to bring a bill in this regard, he said "The bill should have been brought before the disqualification of party's Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachhan."
Claiming that even the alliance partners of UPA government were not taken into confidence on the matter, Verma said it was reflective of the "dictatorial attitude" of Gandhi.
When asked about their stand on the bill, he said the party would take a decision in due course.
He, however, conceded that the law relating to the office of profit was "outdated" and needed amendment.
