“Leaving aside party affiliation with the Samajwadi Party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Congress or any otherparty, the voters should not vote in favor of any candidate having criminal background,” he told reporters.
“If elected, I would bring special packages from the State and the Union Government to develop Varanasi as a model city of the country,” he said and claimed that cutting across the caste lines, a cross section of the society was extending its support to him. However, Gupta cut a sorry figure when encountered with the queries about rising crime and the dance of death in the State and in the lanes and roads of of Varanasi under the SP rule.
“Mulayam Singh has tried to rein in criminals,” was the response the ruling party candidate had to offer. Highlighting his election manifesto, he said setting up of mini-tube-wells in all the 90 wards, replacement of old and outdated electric wires and transformers, infrastructure facilities in all the slums and beautification of the city are the main priorities of Samajwadi Party.
To recall, a total of 47 criminals including 22 history-sheeters are contesting civic election in Varanasi.
A jailed mafia don and sharp shooter of Muna Bajrangi gang, Ramesh Yadav alias Babu Yadav is contesting for the post of corporator from Baghhara (ward number 65) on the SP ticket. Babu Yadav is involved in 28 cases of heinous crimes.
