Though the district party president did not attach much importance to the incident, some senior SP leaders were determined to raise the issue before party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.
According to reports, former corporator Rajkumari Devi was holding marriage anniversary celebrations at her residence in Dharmshala Bazaar on Sunday night. All senior party leaders, including State minister Jaiprakash Yadav, were present on the occasion. They discussed the names of possible candidates for the assembly election. Sources said Minority Financial Welfare Development Corporation director Zafar Amin Dakku proposed the name of Rajkumari Devi. He said if she applied, the party would consider her name for the Gorakhpur Sadar assembly segment. At this, senior leader Jagdish Yadav said the names of most candidates had been finalised and a State minister was deciding who would get the party ticket from Chillupar, Paniara and Sadar assembly segments. District party president Chandrabali Yadav said the matter should not be discussed in public. But, Jagdish Yadav continued his tirade against some party leaders.
Other leaders said it would be wrong to ridicule Jagdish Yadav as he was a senior partyman.
According to sources, Jaiprakash Yadav asked Jagdish Yadav to maintain silence. The situation took an ugly turn when the State minister and Jagdish Yadav stood on their chairs and engaged in a heated exchange. They tried to manhandle each other. However, senior leaders’ intervention brought the situation under control.
When contacted, Jagdish Yadav alleged that the State minister and his supporters were trying to humiliate him. It was up to the party leadership to take a decision on the matter, he added.
