Shah Rukh Khan has been selected to lead a host of celebrities at the India Day Parade in New York. The annual celebrations to mark India's Independence Day, which falls on August 15, are being organised by the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Tri-State Area.

"Khan is currently shooting in New York and has a busy schedule, but he has said he will attend the parade," said Jagdish Patel, president of FIA Tri-State Area.

Other celebrities who will take part in the parade are Bollywood star Sonali Bendre, magician P.C. Sorcar Jr., police officer Kiran Bedi (who is now with the U.N.), cricketer Kapil Dev and Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Lynn Williams.

Patel said rains had led to the rescheduling of the shooting schedules of both Khan and Bendre. "Khan will be at the Galaxy Star Nite banquet at Royal Albert's Palace in New Jersey on August 18, or at the cultural programme at the end of the programme on August 17, or at the Review Stand during the parade."

Patel said for the first time, retired Indian armed services personnel would march in the parade. "The official flags of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force have already arrived at the Indian embassy in Washington," he said.
